Keep in mind the amount of time the contractor and his workers will be around your house, and family. You want to make sure you are comfortable with who you hire and you are comfortable. This is a huge part of choosing a contractor. Ask questions, listen to the answers and go with your gut!
Licensed and Insured?
There are lots of people with the skills to get your project complete. However one of the most important qualifications should be making sure your contractor you choose is properly licensed for the work and insured. Hiring an unlicesnsed contractor can put you and your neighbors at risk. Make sure you ask for proof of insurance and you look up the contractors license online. When a contractor holds all the proper licensing you can be confident they have the knowledge to get your project completed up to all local building codes and requirements.
Experienced In Your Type Of Project?
This goes with licensed and insured. If your contractor is licensed for your type of work and can show you pictures or give you references for similar work you will feel a lot more comfortable. Make sure that each contractor that is preparing a bid is working from the same plans and specifications. A contractor who has completed similar projects to yours will know the nuances of your type of project and can accurately bid and anticipate and make you aware of any issues or items that should be address before or during the project.
Detailed Contract A Must
Make sure that all contracts detail the same costs, brands and items that you want to be installed. You should see brands and model numbers of appliances. There can never be too much detail in a contract. If there are variables such as a front door that hasn’t been chosen you can have it listed as up to $900 for a front door, so that you know the price range and its not left open ended. After talking to several contractors you won’t be able to remember who told you what. This is why details on the bids or so very important.
